Fagundes Varela

Fagundes Varela

In February of 1888, a group of Italian immigrants’ families moved into Alfredo Chaves Colony Forest, founded in 1884, arriving on the lands where today is Fagundes Varela town. Some German, Polish and French families were colonizers too.

The little village of Santo Antônio de Pádua Chapel, founded in 1891, became known as II Cento, because it was located at rural lot number one hundred of Linha Segunda de Barro Preto, Visconde de Pelotas.

The organization and development of the Chapels is a result of priests’ presence. In 1913, Santo Antônio de Pádua Parish was created and Priest Ângelo Mônaco, pastor from 1923 to 1948, was an outstanding religious and social presence and the fame of his blesses, considered miraculous, attracted believers from the entire region.

From 1936, the district had a strong development impulse due to the settlement of Bella Vista pig farmers Cooperative which produces the famous Sul Brasil products.
