Bento Gonçalves was initially inhabited by indigenous and its name was Cruzinha until 1870, because it was where a “tropeiro” (drover) died and where he was sepulchered. The President of São Pedro Province created Dona Isabel and Conde Deu Colonies (today, they are Bento Gonçalves and Garibaldi, respectively), aiming to enlarge colonization area.

Located in the Vineyard region, it has as main attraction Fenavinho Park, where fairs, expositions and sports and cultural events take place. There are many natural attractions in the city.

Furniture and Wine are city’s economical base, but there are other activities as metallurgical sector, food, clothes and leather and rubber artifacts industry, graphical arts and plastic sector, which present the best increase perspectives in the current economical context. Bento Gonçalves has quality and variety in commerce, providing good shopping options.

There are about one hundred thousand inhabitants in the city and all necessary infrastructure for the visitors to enjoy gastronomy, leisure, customs and traditions of the hospitable people from Bento Gonçalves. Nowadays, by its tourist reference, the city develops the activity, which acquires expression each year, especially with rural and business tourism.
